Kellie died in 1926 and the construction on the castle stopped suddenly.\u00a0 This half-done castle now stands solitary, looking surreal among Perak\u2019s wild plantations, projecting an aura of sadness, mystery and unfinished glory. Mountfort. He tried to build it out of belian (ironwood) timber, and then tried brick and finally stone. The regular stones come from nearby Buli Sim Sim; the white window stones are from Hong Kong. The church managed to avoid major damage during WWII, which is why the Australians donated the lovely stained glass windows on the 60th anniversary of WWII. This hotel now offers great boutique accommodation to tourists, who stay here to admire its plush interiors, colonial architecture, five exclusive grand suites and old-age customs. The castle is surrounded by 16 hectares of fabulous landscaping, which adds to its look and appeal as a castle of old. Though it is not exactly a castle, it was a royal residence; Sultan Iskandar Shah stayed here while waiting for the completion of his palace, the Istana Iskandariah. Istana Kenangan has been used to host royal receptions and accommodate palace guests. When viewed from above, the two-level structure appears like a sword in its scabbard. The castle has beautiful wooden carvings and woven wall-mats everywhere, which add to its beauty and period elegance.
